Juneau’s Capital Transit Begins Fleet Transition
from Diesel to Electric
Today, April 8, 2021, marks a milestone on Juneau’s journey towards a purely renewable energy future. State and local leaders, including Governor Dunleavy, Mayor Weldon, and Senator Kiehl, as well as dozens of committed city staff. non-profit leaders, and engaged local citizens, gathered at Capital Transit’s ‘bus barn’ for the official dedication ceremony.
Juneau’s first electric public transit bus, a 40-foot Proterra, slated to begin service on April 14, will eliminate nearly 230,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually. This state-of-the-art electric bus will save money through the purchase of local hydro power instead of diesel, and see greatly reduced maintenance costs. Funding is already in place for seven more electric city transit buses and an additional grant has been submitted for further funding that will move the city’s fleet even closer to its goal of full electrification.
